St Bernard’s Primary School, Glengormley became the only school in Northern Ireland to achieve the ‘iTeach Champion School Award’ for 2016-17 and one of only three ever to receive the award. Three teaching staff also received the 'Silver iTeach Award’ for promoting excellence in teaching and learning using the iPad and one teacher received the 'Gold iTeach Award' for excellence in leadership, teaching and learning using the iPad.
There were only eight teaching staff across the north to achieve these Silver and Gold awards at the iLearn Conference 2017 in Belfast’s Waterfront Hall and St Bernard's collected four of these awards. Five members of staff have also recently been recognised as 'Apple Teachers’ when using the iPad in the classroom, with the rest of the teaching staff are currently undertaking this CPD opportunity provided by Apple.
John Meighan, ICT Co-Ordinator at the school, said the use of iPad technology was highly beneficial for students. “We are the only school in Northern Ireland to achieve it for the 2016 calendar year,” he said. “The award recognises excellence in teaching and learning using the iPad in creative and inspiring ways throughout the school.
“We promoted technology and provided teachers with adequate training and appropriate resources to work with so the children could benefit. The use of technology comes through enjoyment for different methods of learning. The pupils love using the iPads.”
